Beautiful outcomes people! I'm almost having withdrawal symptons having not been able to play for couple of days.

Original. I like to use this pexels image for testing so I used it for all variations
but will use different images next time.

I also especially like Issabella's architectural outcomes plus the girl in post #98 and dinasset's #87 Complex.

I'm remembering why I don't use G'mic much, it's very slow here but then this computer is quite old. This makes it hard to assess what changing a setting does. I'm wondering if the standalone G'mic would run faster than invoking it from gimp. Meanwhile I'm cropping the image to a small sample to play with the settings before running with them on the whole image.

Yeah, same problem with my desktop. Have to wait for G'mic to start, and some filters take time.

That is lovely edit indeed. But it's not only because of the engrave parameters used, the pattern and the colors create that coolness.
I might be wrong but I think that "op art circles" G'mic effect was used after the engrave on the original image or on a copy of the layer that had been edited with simple local contrast.

@dinasset nice fantasy. I like that you experiment so much with different ideas.

Here is my today's play. This has op art fx shapes applied on a copy of the local contrast layer, and the engrave layer is set to HSV value.
The whole workflow differs bit from the original tut, because it's so fun to test!



This one is a mix of new fantasy/pin up paint style workflow tut I'm working on, the results are sometimes random because of the graphics boost filter. I just added the Engrave lines on top in multiply mode.

Testing a quick method, this was done with 3 steps.
The engrave settings must be spot on for it to look nice, the downside is that the colors will be always quite unsurprising because they become visible by using HSV Value mode.

Love your work Nidhogg! They are all super but the first in post #108 is my top favourite of your recent ones. Would love to be able to make that.

Meanwhile I'm still on the basics so had a go at a couple of photos that ilzaf had used in his Photo To Comic thread. Not sure I'm improving but am getting more familiar with gmic.

Thanks teapot, looking nice! I like how the bg turned out in your kid image.
Nothing stops you from getting the similar look I had with the fashion face in post #108.
I used op art balls or circles on a copy layer of the original or the local contrast layer and just played with the blending modes.

Does it matter what G'MIC version is used for this tutorial? I ask because the version I have is the most recent one which is 2.83. I also ask because maybe not all the steps listed in the tutorial are needed when using the updated version. Just a thought.

No it doesn't as long as it's new enough. I used 2.74 so 2.83 will make no difference.
All the steps are not needed, but that's how I liked to do it in the beginning. If I just used the Engrave filter it wouldn't be worth a tut.
Though I have now multiple tweaked engrave settings, and slightly varying ways to get different looking outcomes, especially for the coloring.
If you find something that works, just post your outcomes. Always good to have new ideas.
