I have been obsessed with trying to use GIMP to render such as wood, glass, metal, rust, corrosion, and on-and-on. Here are some of my attempts. These are very old images, from the 2000~2002 time frame, made from scratch using only the native GIMP filters of that time.

This was a study of fractured stone using the Eye of Horus as a motif.

Glass with a textured background:

A study of rust or corrosion.

This is an attempt to create a glossy surface such as that on glazed ceramic. This is a Kaleidoscope imge.

Solved. I discovered my error.

I wish I knew! My first post. I uploaded the images but they don't appear. As a test, I renamed the first image, uploaded it, and this time I copied and pasted the assigned URL directly into the post at a line just following the introductory remark for the image. This time the image appeared, but at the top, not following my remark. Not only that, the image appeared twice.

Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

I'm impressed! In 2000, I was hounding all the GIMP scripters at the registry about showing their work along with their scripts. Took you long enough. <wink>

Thanks, Mahvin!
Unfortunately, I have never done a script. I recall only scant mention of scripts when I frequented GUG in 2000-2002 (remember that site? The GIMP User Group?).
Now there are scripts for everything, it seems. I've been away from GIMP way too long!

My post seems to have been moved to Tutorials. Odd, since I have no tutorials.
At any rate, I dusted off some more relics from my hard drive.

Image
Supposed to be a weathered wood(?) frame enclosing
"The Baptism of Christ" by Aert De Galder, 1710.

Image
This is a rendering in wood, metal, and glass of the winged Ra.

Image
A study in stone, glass, metal and, of course. corrosion.

Image
An attempt to render translucence; an opal-like stone with other textures.

Image
Some silliness using stone, glass, and a bit of metal.
A little too dark, I think.

RonQ, I think some will eventually ask you "How did you do that?" So, be prepared to face those questions. It doesn't mean you HAVE to share the methods (if you remember). Some processes are so convoluted and complex, creating a tutorial would be a tedious time consuming task. All works are very creative and I appreciate you sharing them. I show my students what's possible and then they get inspired by their own imagination.

Very nice textures, thanks for sharing and welcome. :bigthup
Isn't the first one Eye of Horus?

Mahvin, you're so very right; convoluted and complex. Your approach to students is correct. You can teach the tools, the medium, and give examples and demonstrations, but ultimately there are the elements of judgement and instinct that come from the individual. So, with GIMP, tutorials for complex things have to leave out critical judgments that need to be made at made at each step. Writing them, as you say, is tedious. I once wrote one, for the long-vanished GIMP User Group, on rust and corrosion. It was hard to write! As for my stuff, and "how did you do that?", I can answer in only the most general way (and you are right, I don't remember some things exactly). Also, some filters I used in those days have vanished in the newer releases. Anyway, this reply is getting to be too way long, so thanks for you comments and chat!

Nidhogg, Thanks for your comment. you are correct, and I know that very well. No idea how "Isis" crept into my mind (isn't there a novel or movie named "Eye of Isis"?). But thanks for pointing that out to me. I'll edit.
