OK, here goes. (ref: http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/how-to-ge ... 48488.html)

Download saulgoode's Mean Fill script: sg-mean-fill.scm

Suggestion before starting: Ctrl + T to disable selection Ants (which can slow down everything if enabled; Thanks to RobA for suggesting this trick to me).

Step one: Choose your target, duplicate, and run Filters > G'MIC > Presets/Testing > Lylejk's stencil. Press Apply and repeat a few times, then OK

Image

Step two: Create an additional Fill layer and choose a pattern and run Stencil on that layer too. Repeat Apply a few times, then OK. You'll see why later; I chose Dried Mud for this one).

Image

Set the Top layer to Lighten and merge Down.

Image

Run Stencil on the resulting Layer. Repeat Apply a few times, then OK. Doing this gives you smaller brick sizes (very important).

Image

Run Filters > Distort > Value Propogate (set to Darken) to widen the outlines.

Image
Invert the result for the mask and cut it to clipboard.

Image

Toggle selection Mask and paste it into the target image.

Image

Untoggle the selection mask and run Saul's Script-fu, Filters > Misc > Mean Fill.

Image

Deselect then Dup the result, and blur the lower layer 1 px and duplicate till solid and merge down. This step widens the islands.

Image

Below's the result of everything so far. Hope that helps.

Image

Additional steps for texturizing, but I'm not going to outline those steps. below's my final result. :)

Original image here.

This is a lot of fun. I haven't perfected my technique but still get interesting results.

Just got back. Thanks for doing this O; it needed to be here as many of you all know why. I do like this result too. Amazing how fun the GIMP can be when you get folks like David (G'MIC), Rob, Saul, Mahvin, PC, yourself and so many others (can't name them all) to share the wealth of knowledge with the masses. Many here already know I do use PS too, but my main editor is GIMP and one of the main reasons is it's comunity of users. :)

Thank you PhotoComix. I, too, wondered how that image would look as a mosaic. I think it improved the painting.

Can you imagine that painting on your wall? Urg! I'd sell it. A genuine Picasso is worth a lot of $$$.

Lyle, I've been having fun with your stencil filter. This was done using a black and white diagonally striped pattern. I didn't apply the stencil to the image at all.

I like the grated result O. Have to clarify something though. It's only my preset because David kept it for me (he redesigned Stencil and I liked the old way better, so he kept the preset and named it for me). I only wish I could program these cool G'MIC presets like PC and Tom (and of course David). :)
