It worked :)

The problem is that because i'm new to GIMP I didn't know what the hell I was doing with all these layers and save to path and stuff but following your tuts is easy and they work :)

I'm wondering how I get this smiley to the size a smiley like " ;) " this is.. The scale tool would work but I don't know how big the smileys here are so..
:(

They are 15x15 pixels... Just right click and look at properties and it will tell you

If you scaled your smiley down to that size it would be mush. Here's what I did. I took your big eek smiley, and Image > Canvas size and added 100 to the x measurement, then clicked the center button.

Made a new layer and filled it with white and moved it below your smiley.

Then zoomed out to 5%.

Took a screen shot. Then I cropped down to the white, then cleared the white using the eraser tool set to hard edge and size Circle (01) and erasing carefully around it. I added a few black pixels where needed. Cropped and it's 16x18.

I don't know.

Here's the big smiley I made with Jolie's tutorial. I like the green grinning smiley in here so I patterned my big one after it.

I don't know yet how you make that mouth and the eyes..

Did you draw it yourself or did you do it with a tool? I have no idea how you got there :)

how did you create the mouth for example :cool

At least my steps are clear. ;)

You need to get your head around selection. I made a video to introduce this video so people woud understand better what they were doing. But I stopped making those videos because they don't get many views. It seems that people want results rather then explanations.

I'll have a look for the video for you and another one on the rectangle and ellips select tool. It's isn't everything there is to know, but maybe it will help getting your head around what you've done while making the eek smiley.

p.s. I think smileys are made in actual size but zoomed in while working. I've been meaning to try it (again) but so far I suck at it. :hehe

Thanks!!

I have another question... IS there any difference between Photoshop and GIMP? Since I know photoshop is more popular but can you do more/less with it or is it exactly the same..

Each has it's own way of doing things so trying to compare them is kind of like apples and oranges. They're both image manipulation programs. They both do very good jobs.

The biggest difference is in price not ability. PhotoShop is over $1,000 in cost; GIMP is free.

I love GIMP! :gimp

It is a lot of difference
but all graphic editor have similar goal and use a similar logic so the basic principle hare the same

About main differences ;
PS

1 Has a macrorecorder (aka Action recorder)
2 support 16 bit images
3 support CMIK
4 very high price

Gimp
1 NO macrorecorder
2 8 bit images only
3no CMIK support
but
4 a lot of killer plugins
( PS users may wait years to have something similar.)
Totally free and OS

Most complain come from point 2 and 3 that should be solved with the next version

3 is not very relevant, CMYK is needed just for professional print, and anyway there are already workaround
2 is more relavant for edit photos, expecially to recover underexposed or overexposed pic

1 it is the most important, the bigger limit for professional use but very few complain about, and nobody is working to
solve the problem
To clear the concept a Macro-recorder is something that allow you to follow once the step of a tut,
... record them ..and replay the same same sequence on any series of image

4 it is the gimp winning point...not only for the price difference but because be open source allow him to have killer plugin offering function that will becme available for commercial app as PS only years later.

Just now PS is bloating a new feature "content aware filling" that is available from years in gimp
Sad note is that is available not as a core function but thank to a old plugin "Resynthesizer" never updated and no more maintened

Here's my attempt... I couldn't get the inside of the mouth right... Image

ETA: Not sure why it has an orange background when I saved it. It was transparent background when I saved it. Anyone know why it would do that?
