well its pretty easy actually just pick a picture that has a white background or any other picture not all of them works but most of them do so yea anyways u go to layers and click transparency than add alpha channel than layers again this time instead of add alpha channel click alpha selection than push delete on the keyboard that should delete the background and u should have the check board colors that looks like this Image" than go to select then click none than save it to png file and the file should look transparent wich would look something like this " Image" see how goku looks transparent (i can do better than that but its just an example )

i hope i made sense to u all

Thanks for the tid-bit

That is an easy way if you have a one color background.
You could also just right click the layer/add alpha channel, and select the color with the color select tool and go to Edit/Cut or delete on your keyboard.

The problem is most backgrounds are not one color. :)

Well it is hard to define, it would be weird as a tut, it is not a help request, not a new, not a resource..

Look as a sort of tip so closest category may be tutorial , but as tut may be delusive...oh yes could be a offtopic chit chat (but is not OT..)

Anyway seems you miss a point of the magic wand (and most of the selection tool) SHIFT +click add to the selection CTRL+click subctract ,there are more option as to intersect but the first 2 are really basic...because even if the BG is of a solid color select with a single click usually will leave fringes and another shift+click with the magic wand ,still on the solid color but close to the edges to cut may be needed to minimize the fringes
