Don't forget that the "Elevation" setting can be used to set the bump as well.

Excellent. I usually use Thin Brush smoothing but I'll give Photocomix smoothing a go one day.

The idea is to smooth any images (self, comic, or other) before bumping them because it improves the look of the image after bumping. I got a little ahead of myself on this one, because I usually adjust elevation along with depth to help make it look as realistic as possible. Thin fonts make better impressions than thick ones, as well.
