This is a short tutorial on how to save your animation as png in Windows XP

First get the official plugin added below in attachments.

Extract the files and you will have two files, your plug-in > file-apng.exe and file-apng.ui

Open your (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\)
look for the file called "file-png.exe and remove that.
[Before you remove it, back it up or save it somewhere just in case you need it back.]

After removing, place the two files that you just extracted into that folder.
Close folder.
If you happen to have Gimp open, close it then re-open
You should now have everything you need to make animated png images.

Open Gimp, make an animated image or open one you already have.
Save as filename.png.

A window should open that looks like this.
Image
Make sure the animation is checked, then click export. You should now have an animated png. Try opening it again with gimp and you should have your layers and it should be animated.

I just tried this out...so far no luck as when I reopen gimp I get a strange message about not finding something in lib. gimp works ok, but does not show the choice for apng in the save as menu. Maybe it's because I haven't upgraded beyond 2.4. One of these days, I will do it.
The exe file icon looks normal, but the ui file icon looks different than the rest of the files in the plug ins folder???

2-ton. Did you put your plug-in here:
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins
The plug-in file and the UI file are both different in looks but make sure you put them both in that folder.
Make sure you remove the file.png first and save it somewhere in case you want it back.
When you save the object you don't have to save it as apng. just name it filename.png.....
Then open it up with gimp and go to animations > playback. it should be animated....

Yes, I put both files into that plug in folder and I took out the png file and stashed it on my desktop. Of course, I don't have an apng file to test it with, but when I tried to save as a gif file, in the drop down there was no png choice because I took that out, and there was no apng choice either.

Don't save it as a gif file. Save it as a png file.

I wasn't clear. I opened a gif file because it was an animation. Then I tried to use 'save as' to resave it as a png...or apng...neither choice was available in the drop down list.
Maybe I should have opened a new file, made a two layer png, save as png or apng animation? but that choice isn't in my drop down list, argh. Am I wrong in assuming that the png/apng choice should be in the drop-down save as list?

Yes, it should be there. Did you try to put a png extension on the file when you saved it? Just to see what would happen?

no, I was in a hurry, and figured that if it wasn't in the drop down list, then something was wrong.

same exact problem i had at first...do this
create an image with oh 25 frames and click save...look at the bottom of your save dialog and click open the file extensions drop down window...click on png+apng extension in the list...should be there if you have the plugin in the plugins folder with the ui file.

now a window will open when you click save that says your image is the wrong extension...save anyways.
close the image in GIMP...reopen it doing the same way...choose the png+apng file extension in the save dialog..at the bottom...the image will open as an animation with all layers intact...

worked for me =)

good luck

This is an old thread and lot has changed.

What version of Gimp are you using and have you seen Rod's efforts in getting apng working with the latest Gimp from my site?

Did you mean 2.6.11?
Sorry, Rod posted viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3387&start=10#p42922 for the 2.7.5 Gimp.

Jamie, I think you are having the same problem as me.

There are more than one apng plug-ins floating around. You might have installed the Partha one for 2.7.5 into your Gimp 2.6.11. That won't work.
Since I took out Gimp and reinstalled it, I never did get the proper file.apng back into plug-ins again.

Has anyone out there got the apng plug-in that goes with Gimp 2.6.11? If so, could you please post it and say what version of Gimp it is for with the plug-in?

Thank you in advance.
