The original tutorial was written by an unknown author. The path to the original tutorial is http://www.wingimp.org/tutorial/reflection.html, but that website is no longer accessible. The original tutorial was named, "Reflection"

Download a pdf document of this tutorial below.

In this tutorial you will be doing a bump map, displacement and a gradient map.

  1. Create a new image 750 x 300 pixels and fill it with white. Rename the layer blur.

  2. Write some black text using a bold font that is plain and make it large, size 150 - 200.
To center the text Layer > Autocrop Layer. Ctrl + X, or Edit > Cut the layer, then Ctrl + V, or Edit > Paste. Right-click the floating layer and choose Layer.
Right-click the text layer and select Layer to Image size.
Rename the layer text#1 and duplicate it. Move text#2 layer below the blur layer.

  3. Merge text#1 layer down to the blur layer.
Filters > Blur > Gaussian blur. Make the settings 15 and apply.

  4. Make a new layer and name it bump.
Fill the bump layer with gray (color 989898).

  5. Filters > Map > Bump Map
    Use these settings:
Bump map: Be sure to select the blur layer in the drop down.
Map Type: Sinusoidal in the drop down
Compensate for darkening and Tile bumpmap should be checked
    Azimuth: 135.00
    Elevation: 27.00
    Depth: 7
    All the rest are zero

  6. Select the Blend tool (gradient).
Select the Three bars sin gradient
Colors > Map > Gradient Map

  7. Create a new layer and name it, horizon
    Select the blend tool again
    Select the Horizon 2 gradient
While holding down the Ctrl key, draw straight down from the top to the bottom of the horizon layer with the blend tool.

  8. Filters > Map > Displace
In the two drop downs select the blur layer.
    Use the default settings.

  9. Right-click the text#2 layer and select Alpha to Selection
Select > Grow by 5 pixels.
Select > Invert or Ctrl + I to invert the selection.
Select the bump layer and press the Delete key.
Select the horizon layer and press the Delete key.
Select > None, or Ctrl + Shift + A to turn off the selection.

  10. Move the horizon layer below the bump layer.
Change the layer mode of the bump layer to Overlay.

  11. Merge the bump layer down to the horizon layer.

  12. Delete the blur and the text#2 layers.

  13. Filters > Light & Shadow > Drop Shadow. Use the default settings or change them to your preference.

This was done using the Land 1 gradient and duplicating the horizon layer.

The bump, horizon layer, drop shadow layer and the horizon layer copy were merged, then the rectangle tool with 30 rounded corners was used to select, the selection inverted and the delete key pressed.

A drop shadow was applied to the result.

You can get some interesting effects with other gradients and using the Sawtooth wave effect in the gradient dialog. When you fill the horizon layer with the gradient, start at about vertical center while holding down the Ctrl key. You get a striped effect. You can download my GDrbw.ggr (Grateful Dead Rainbow) gradient below.

A font with cutout areas in it gives more "action" to the bump map, gradient map and displace. Get the Oil on the Water font here: http://www.dafont.com/oil-on-the-water.font

That's really nice. I had it but I don't remember where I got it. Thank you for posting it here in the tutorial. Makes them much faster and easier.

you can get the same effect with a layerfx bevel and then curves on shadow and highlights

My tutorial was posted in March 2009, and I believe the original Reflection tutorial was posted in 2002, so it's older than the layerfx script.

Nice results everyone!
