In answer to PhotoMaster's request here about ways to use G'MIC.

PhotoComix is the G'MIC expert but I'm willing to share what I did.

First after opening your image, duplicate it and close the original.

I duplicate the image layer a few times and turn off all but the top two. It's good to have at least one in reserve.

My first pass in G'MIC on the cat I used Artistic > B&W Pencil. I only lowered the Amplitude a little while keeping an eye on the fur on the tail. When I got something I liked I clicked OK. I set the layer to Value mode I think and merged it down and duplicated that layer.

On the top layer I went to Artistic > B&W Sketch and I think I just changed the Stroke length a little and clicked OK. I set that layer mode to Burn, but browse through the modes until you get something you like. Merge that layer down. Don't duplicate.

Last I went to Presets > Thin brush smoothing, and the only two things I changed were Amplitude and sharpness.

Then I used the paths tool to select both of the eyes. You can select around one eye, then hold down the Shift key and click a new path node on the other eye, let up on the Shift key and continue selecting around the second eye. Press enter to start the marching ants, press B to get rid of the path nodes.

Color > Hue & Saturation. I selected yellow in the color to adjust and slid the hue bar so that the yellow changed to a greenish yellow. Then I increased the lightness and saturation until I got what I wanted.

In his tut Tom doesn't use a pencil layer but layermasks , 3 luminosity masks( for shadows middletones highlight ) each for a different sketch layer, to combine in darken only mode


I am tempted to use this script http://gimpfx-foundry.sourceforge.net/b ... xtract.scm to get a different kind of layermask ...Layermask based on the diffferent channels should be good base to create masks for speciphic objects (as blue sky, green leaves, red fruits... )

But the Sketch filter on my PC has a painfully slow preview and that make a pain experiments different settings and a similar approach will multipy the time

I am just thinking load:...simple things usually work better and that simple but intuitive combination of Gmic effect layers on the original you show in this tut works well and straight

Is there a link that shows anything about that layermask script like results or instructions? I just get the script when I download it.

The script doesn't create layermasks but decompose the imagine in all possible channels (,so not only RGB but also CMYK, LAB, HSV)
Each channel become a new layer (the original remain at the bottom )

You may expore them just by toggling off visibility one by one....The first 2 layers you will see will be very delusive but don't give up, look the others


To narrow the result CYMK and RGB are both work a look as base for possible masks .. a bit less the V and L channels,
...much less the others

But then copy the layers and paste as layermasks has to be done manually and is a bit boring (This stirs something in my memory...maybe Saulgoode wrote a script to quickly paste layermask ? .. )

Nice tutorial, ill have to dive more into GMIC.I do not use it too often, but their are sooo many filters there...lol =)

I ran the lasm filter on the original cat image. It ended up with 14 masks.

I copied the image so that I had 14 and moved each layer up under a mask.

Then I used the copy mask to layers and each time I had only one layer visible (the one below the mask) to copy the mask to.

maybe the cat was not the most adapt for similar mask:
i think more useful when there are object of different color to masks

PS how the Gmic Sketch filter works on your machine ? on my is really slow for updating the preview
