Okay in this tutorial i am going to show you how to burn up your guitar, and i don't mean how to play it.
I am going to literally take this image of DimeBag Darrels AXE and fry it.
First off, this image was downloaded from Photo Bucket so i am not sure if it is royalty free.In other words
please do not use it for commercial purposes as i do not want to get sued, and neither do you i'm sure.
Secondly, i do not have to tell you this tutorial is long, save it every step if you can! FlamingGuitar.xcf ... or something.
Just keep saving the xcf file so you dont lose your information for editing purposes. OK lets start!
First download this image
Open your Gimp im using 2.6.10 stable version...
Create a new image 1416 in width and 800 in height, and fill it with #000000 (black).
Open the guitar image as a new layer center it in the canvas and go to Image/Transform/Rotate 90 degrees ccw (counter clockwise)
Rename your guitar image layer "guitar" , and your background layer "glow" - give your glow layer a alpha channel (right click Add Alpha Channel)
Make sure your glow layer is under your guitar layer. Right click the guitar layer and choose Layer to Image size. Now select the "select by color tool", and click the black bg of the guitar image. All the black around the guitar is selected click delete.Use the eraser tool to get rid of any other remnants around the guitar or do what i did and magnify up real close, select the "select by color tool" and click the colored remnants and
delete them until all the remnants are gone. The important thing is to get rid of the bg however you want to.
Sorry i couldn't find a transparent guitar image of Darrels AXE.
Create another transparent layer above your glow layer and name it "glow red". Your image and layers should now look like this.
Select the "glow red" layer. Double click the Circular selection tool, tool options will open.Put in these values.
Fixed - In the drop down menu select SIZE. Type in 595x1240.Center the selection around the guitar image without touching the guitar image with any
sides of the selection...MAKE SURE your "glow red" layer is selected.....fill the selection with the color #800000. Edit/Fill with Foreground color
Duplicate this layer name it "glow orange"..right click alpha to selection...fill with #802100.
Go to Select/None
Your image should now look like this.
Select the "glow red" layer and go to Filters/Blur/Gaussian Blur, and put in these values.
Select the "glow orange" layer and go to Filters/Repeat Gaussian blur.
Set the layer mode of the glow orange layer to dissolve.Lower it under the glow red layer.
Set the glow red layer to divide. And its opacity to 40% . Your image should look like this now.
Duplicate the guitar layer name it "right burn".Right click the layer choose alpha to selection.
Fill the selection with light yellow color #f4f21a. Select/None move the right burn layer over two pixels to the right, and two up.
Place it underneath the "guitar" layer.
Set the "right burn" layer to dissolve.Set the opacity to 55.
Download this image
Open it as a new layer and rotate it ccw 90 degrees.Place it where you want it and set the mode to multiply.
Your image should now look like this.
Well it looks pretty cool like this but its missing some flames for the top and some more burning and frying effects on the guitar body soooooo...
Click on the guitar layer and duplicate it.Name the new layer "guitar glow"
Go to colors/colorize put in these values.
Set the layer mode for "guitar glow" to you guessed it! ... BURN!The reason i chose this mode is because it makes the bottom part of the Axe look like its getting crispified.
Your image should now look like this..
Now we need some flamage on the top.
Duplicate your Flames_AXE.jpg layer. Make both flame layers invisible.
Link the guitar, right burn and guitar glow layers and move the guitar down to the bottom like this..
Unlink all layers.
Click on the "guitar glow" layer and lower it under the guitar layer.
This will bring out the strings and color for the head more.
Click on the Flames6_AXE.jpg layer (should be second from top layer)...set the opacity to 30.
Merge down guitar layer, right burn layer and guitar glow...merge them together. You should now have only a right burn layer...rename it guitar.
Select the "guitar" layer.
Now we need to carefully erase some of the "guitar" layer.Magnify the top like this.
Just keep erasing the sides and top making it look like the guitar is inside the flames..like this..
Set your zoom to 55%
Now what we need to do is make the guitar sharper..so duplicate the guitar layer name it guitar sharper, and set the mode to Dodge.
Download this image..
Open the image as a new layer.
Put it just above all the other layers, and flip it vertically, or rotate it to your liking. Layer/Transform/Flip Vertically
Set the layer mode to screen and move it around to your liking re size if necessary (always re size down), erase parts of the smoke if you want.
We want to make it look like the smoke is wrapping around the guitar.
Like this..
Now with the top layer selected (the smoke layer)...go to Colors/Colorize and use these settings..
Now duplicate the smoke layer a few times and move them around to your liking like this..
Set the opacity for each smoke layer to your liking...
Now...Create a new layer name it "guitar highlights"
Right click the "guitar" layer and select alpha to selection.
Select the "guitar highlights" layer and go to Select/Grow and grow by 9 pixels.
Fill with a bright yellow or white color (your choice).
Place this layer below the "guitar" layer.
There you go we have officially FRIED Dime bag Darrels AXE.
I miss his music and my prayers are with him and his family, and his band Pantera. God rest his soul.
