This tutorial is very easy and the end result is all about what you prefer, so have fun playing around with colour and texture!

I used a copper/brass corrosion image from the textures website. Excellent textures resource! Thanks for the link, michael.

The tutorial was fun and I enjoyed it. That was a very clever way to make planet rings.

I love anything Star Trek.

I've been thinking about using a NASA image for the background on one. I just need to get going on it.

Feel free to use the example, Michael. The tutorial is a good one, I'll feature your site on my blog.

@O: edge merging is a bit tricky, I actually tried various layer methods within G'MIC, but the easiest method for me was using an image of the Enterprise on a solid black background, using the default settings. I'm trying to learn what most of those settings can be used for, anyway.

I wish gif files were better quality or animated png's were smaller. Here is mine. The ring color varies (the animation) but the variation isn't visible in IE. I hope you like it and I'm sorry about the file size being so big. And the color change is a slow change.

That's beautiful Greg, but it's not animated. I downloaded it and it has 33 layers but no animation. I played it and nada. Image

Actually it is animated, O. The rings change colors, it's just so subtle it's barely noticeable.

Oh, my. How embarraskin'. My eye was on the planet waiting for it to spin and not on the rings.

The planet color looks funny online and I don't know why.
