right click on your file then "open with", you will have a list and you click below on "choose another application" etc
for example for the .rar file, you do as said above and you go where your decompression software is.

If you regularly back up Windows (with an imager like Macrium reflect or Acronis or AOMEI etc), the simplest is to restore an image and in 10 min the problem is solved.

Is this only related to archive files?
Try...
1 "All Settings">"Apps">"Default apps"
2 Scroll down & click"Choose default applications by file type"
3 What program is being used for .rar - .7z - .zip?
If they show IE, click the program>"Manage" and pick archive program.

This is a file association/protocol issue.
If you go to: All Setting> Apps > Default apps
You can go to the bottom of the page and click the reset button,
under Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults.
Since there isn't a default a application associated with .rar files in windows.
This file should display the generic file as it's icon.

Next time you want to work with a .rar file,
be sure to select the appropriate app for the task.
You can also do as described by 00111111 in the previous post.
