You prolly can do this in Krita.

Can it be done with a brush using gradient? Haven't got time right now to try it out.

Yes, you can do it in Gimp. In this 'quickie' version I used three 'favourite' filters - Path Blend, Generate Intermediate Paths and Stroke Visible Paths.

Looks like OMG has it. This is what it looks like just stroking a path with a gradient. Could prolly do a much better job using different dynamics.

Just looking at options with Path Blend script in preparation for the tutorial/helper document requested above by Sallyanne; whenever I go back to using this script from Rob A, I am always amazed at its capability and flexibility. Here is something I knocked up using an SVG gradient, and then turned it into a brush, for a mandala of course.

@Sallyanne - you asked above for a 'tutorial'. I have produced and attached below what is more of a descriptive 'helper' document, but which should allow you to create something like the images that are subject of this thread. Hope it is useful for you. Any problems, please let me know.
If you need the Path Blend script, also let me know and I will post it. Ofnuts plug-ins are available at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-t ... s/scripts/

would it also be possible to post here the three necessary blend scripts so that anyone interested can download them if needed. (so myself )
thanks in advance,gimper66

RobA's site
http://www.silent9.com/incoming/scripts/ - gone
You can still get it via the internet archive site. Was it backed up on the gimpscripts site ? Can't remember.
Ofnuts site(s) ( suprised he did not plug them )

omg,
this is a great tutorial with a fantastic outcome.
not to mention thanks to the path blend scripts, congratulations also to those who wrote the scripts. (they are sometimes forgotten)
this is a first attempt, now we can experiment further.

Gimper66 - thank you. You are right, it is all about experimentation; the gold urn below was created just using multiple Path Blends.

OMG, Thanks a lot for your tutorial. A helpful guide to start.
Gimper's the nice results made me to do a try, too. Thanks.
