Thought I'd start up a Gimp Sketchbook.

Any critiques would be appreciated - thanks in advance.

Here's a study of Conan The Barbarian I did last night:

@Mokonafan: Thanks - Arnie has quite a distinctive look about him :).

@Trandoductin: Thanks mate - Conan was one of his best roles I think :).

@Mahvin: Thanks for the kind words Mahvin - I'll probably be posting mainly studies and experimental sketches in this thread.

I've been practicing making shaded figures from imagination. Any critiques appreciated.

Heheh - hardly - what if I said the last couple of figures were supposed to be of Winnie The Pooh and Tigger?

Anyway - I thought I'd try my hand at studying one of the Master Painters - John Singer Sargent. This is a study of his painting "Man Wearing Laurels". Critiques appreciated as ever.

I would say you are doing a mighty fine job and then some. I'm more of a Winnie the Pooh kind of artist. I love teaching the kids how to draw cartoons.

@Mahvin: Thank you for the kind words :). Do you use Gimp for your art Mahvin?

@RJKD: Yeah it reminds me of Freddie too, I don't think Freddie would have modelled for Sargent though! Thanks for the encouragement, I shall keep posting :).

I do use GIMP for my art, in fact, I show children how to use GIMP software to create art. It's a fascinating thing introducing GIMP to children, where adults seem to complain about how hard GIMP is to use. I find that to be false with the kids. GIMP is only as complicated as you make it. Between Jolie and others who have posted online tutorials for beginners, more and more people are finding GIMP to be user friendly. Places like GIMP Chat, you can virtually ask for a script and a coder will dive right in and work one out. WIN - WIN!

that looks kinda like my brother haha XD
the painting style looks nice, I think it needs a little more light to balance out the shadow.

@Mahvin: You teach Gimp? Cool :). Yeah Gimp is such a powerful tool - there are so many ways to use it :).

@Mokonafan: Heheh - your brother walks around half naked wearing laurels? Thanks for the feedback on the light and shadows - I will have another look at the reference.

Here are some studies of ravens for an illustration I plan to do. I'm also trying to think more like a painter - these were done with minimal line drawings - I focussed more on blocking in colours. If anyone has any tips on painting birds, I'd love to hear from you - thanks :).

It looks excellent to me.
A small note: a bit more attention (details) on the hair and laurel
