Many many years ago, I posted this: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1415#p17111

For whatever reason, I never shared how I created it and left it a mystery even unto myself. So, I'm wandering the web looking for certain vector patterns when I come across the thread I just posted. So, here I am once again, only this time I will share how I made this (even if most of you already know how. Remember FreeImage and Poincare, Lyle. FUN times!) Anyway. Whatever you do, if you're going to follow along, keep your path design small enough to rotate.

You will need this script:
Attachment:
path copy rotate shift.scm [2.15 KiB]
Downloaded 251 times
This script was offered by bkh1914

Open a fairly decent size image: 800 x 800 with black background.

Then create a joined path (which mean the entire path is connected). Have it look something like mine, but make it a little different to suit yourself:

Image

Then while in DESIGN mode, flare out the handles to round it off. Like shown below:

Image

Ok, now, look at the rotation threshold. Will it go outside your image's border? Yes = rescale the path. No = leave it as it is.

If you uploaded the path copy rotate.scm and are good to go, right click on the new path in the Path dialog, and scroll down and select it. Here are my settings (notice Use Image Center is selected):

Image

When done, merge all visible layers (make sure they are checked <eye>) then stroke the path whatever color you desire.

Thank you Mahvin for the instructions. I find paths fascinating but difficult. I do not often accurately visualize what the path will look like when completed. A lot of "trial and error" on my part!

I must have been running a night flyer red eye when I shared the first result. I'm a PATHS guy. If a PATH can be of assistance in my images, it most certainly will play a large role. Enjoy!

Mahvin, thank you so much for your nicely explanation to get such an attractive shape. :tyspin
Here my first try. :bigthup (I'll do more paths) :)

Mahvin - thank you; just a couple of quick tries but this path method already has my mind churning.

In spite of Erisian's avatar taking over the GIMP Chat forum (we're on to you, Erisian!) I'm glad you all found some creativity from this simple tutorial.

Skinnyhouse - very neat rainbow effect.

Mahvin - started playing with the rotation angle, X/Y offsets and centre parameters and lo and behold ... instant mandalas and quick too :)

I like this script, thanks for posting it.

Thank you OMG and Ella - to be honest I didn't put much thought to it - just a tester with the new plug-in.

Bit like this one ...
must get around to planning a path properly then.

It's a fair cop guv. Looks like I've got some work to do to make up for it. :cry

Seriously though, thanks for this tutorial. I'm going to have fun! :coolthup

Been busy and missed all the fun; cool stuff, Mahvin. I really do like Guilloche renders; that is for sure. :)
