Used distance transform (under Contours in G'MIC) to create the brick mask for the result (trick I picked up during my marble binge days). Gives a better controured mosaic result, imo. Still a work in progress, of course. :)

I took those pictures from a ver high tower "Atalaya" in Seville.
But there was crystal to protect people.

Issabella,

I ran Picture To Line Art on the original image.
Applied a Curve to the visible layer to darken the lines - everything happens at the right hand side.

I made the desaturated layer non-visible and then created a New from Visible layer so that I could reduce it's saturation.

Intensified the colouring and texture of the stone work/pavers by a using GMIC/emboss overlay; kept the original sky.

I have tried to make the church stand out. When all else fails, resort to an old-fashioned contrast mask although it has produced artifacts.
