Inkscape's Jam is the best for that glossy look (and it adds dimension, too; 2 birds with one stone). Wish you could port Inkscape's bitmap filters/operations into GIMP itself.

Thanks for the words, DIego/level_0. :)

Thanks, Issabella. Now I need to play with something other than stones. Have an idea for beads. We shall see. :)

Beautiful work lylejk. I like the one in post #19, because it looks like some of the tiles have been fallen off.

Thanks, Nidhogg. Yeah; was going to clone something in those voids but then thought on similar lines as what you wrote. Does give it an authentic like feel. The missing pieces was an artifact of the Morphological back and forth that I used to smooth the stones. :)

OK; this time I used BRL with wooden source for the the result. More matted. Added some texture to the stones as well. :)

Thanks, Issabella. I used G'MIC's Pen preset on the mask (followed by auto-level) to smooth the stones. Worked great on the last one I did, imo. :)

Hi all and happy new year!
I'm reading this paper "Simulating Decorative Mosaics" of Hausner
There is a comparison with gimp mosaic tool and a new algorithm (hausner's algo).
There is a way to improve current version to paper quality and precision? What do you think about it?

Care to share a link to Hausner's paper? Would like to see how his approach compares to Dr. di Blasi's. :)

A piece of cake.

Quote:
The method uses centroidal voronoi diagrams which normally arrange points in regular hexagonal grids. By measuring distances with an manhattan metric whose main axis is adjusted locally to follow the chosen direction field, the centroidal diagram can be adapted to place tiles in curving square grids

Happy 2021 to all

Yes; I saw this article before many years ago. I even downloaded a program to do these as I recall. Still; I do like Dr. di Blasi's approach a bit better. As for the way I do these, G'MIC skeleton preset does sort on an inverse Voronoi function (i.e., you provide the center dots and it produces the Voronoi outlines). Regardless, this article's result does use much more consistent sized squares. Thanks for the link. :)

Lyle, did you ever try to ask David whether G'MIC could have a new preset able to create dots following the borders of a user defined area, which could then be input to Skeleton?

Have not, Diego. David's quite the busy man and I've asked way too much of him over the years. Maybe you can. lololololol

Well, today's my Friday; hope you all have a great day. :)

The hausner app to test the mosaic quality?
About "di blasi", you currently use the old jar app? Or has been implemented in gmic?
