Thanks racer-x. No I didn't use Sprites but that sounds interesting I'll check it out. I used the technique explained by K1TesseraEna in the thread linked to below, in particular posts #10, #25 and #32:

Can't come up for a name for this one, I just called it "Wire Text". I created the code for this text effect and I don't know how to name it. Can you give me some ideas?
