@Chris...I saw you using a dynamic setting but couldn't make out what that was.
Are those bristle brushes standard with GIMP?

I belive the bristles comes with the GIMP 2.8 brushset.
On the dynamics, i set only the fade length and activate hard edge.

BTW: i found an old test using real textures:
(smudge from the dark parts out)
