Started off using voronoi stipple and then fed the dots through G'MIC to create the panels. Still not as aesthetic to me as Dr. di Blasi's approach. :)

@Graechan
start mosaic.jar
select OPUS MUSIVUM + DIR.GUIDELINES
open your image (not too big...)
run CREATE
you get something like this

you're welcome
(you always help me: did you see my last update of my woodcut script? it includes your requirement of:
- having rescale optional
- make seamless applied to the pattern)

to me it's an excellent result (and w/o size limitations, as I can see)
what did you do exactly?

After running Voronoi Stipple (both image and negative of image into the program and blended the Dots in GIMP), I ran G'MIC's Skeleton preset (thinning; yes it's slow) followed by GIMP's Dilate filter to widen the outlines. I then inverted and ran G'MIC blend>shape Average (under customer Testing>lylejk>) with transparency. I then commenced to add dimension using G'MIC's Local Orientation preset (under Contours) to taste. :)

Glad you workedit out Graechan. The trick I use to further process the result is, after running the initial target image (gives you a colored result of course), I use the same parameters but change the image to a solid white one. This then gives you all white blocks. I then feed the result into GIMP, resize, then Autoequalize the image (makes the line darker). I then run G'MIC's Lylejk Stencil to clean the edges before using Blend (Shape Average) under Testing>Lylejk

Here's another one; re-thought how to create the initial stippler mask in order to give more varying sized tiles. :)

another program? downloadable? or...

This time I used Amphisoft's Xylograph filter (PS filter ran using Shellout) to create the Voronoi target mask. :)

This look like fun, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

Be sure to run auto-equalize before you use Lylejk Stencil to clean up the result dinasset. Still, you got the flow right, so, now you can make the tut. My tut days are over. lol
