First of all, my apologies to grosood; should have started another thread then taking away from his fantastic one. Anyway, just wanted to share a result using David's new engrave preset. I can see book publisher's wanting to use this one David. :)

Great Lyle !

Just to remind the reader : there is a new G'MIC filter Black & White / Engrave available to play with :

And it is definitely nice to create drawings from images too. Here is my last attempts with my daughter and me):

Another example, with the filter Engrave used two times, then mixed, with a color layer :

I'm playing more and more with this filter, and already I think I've a new pipeline I will be able to code as a new filter.
This is the kind of results I get :

I'm just a bit afraid about the amount of parameters to set in order to get the desired result.
I'm trying to figure out how to estimate them automatically, but this is not so easy.

Blend a little half-tone dithering to this would make possibly a comic like result or even a Lichtenstein. :)

with a totally different approach, tried your filter, David, using the parameter Perturbations set to 150.
Got excellent results (according to my taste and my goal), both B&W and coloured
here the outcomes (source image -cropped- from Deviant Art)

Yeah; blending can be more an art then science David. Thought I would try a half-tone blend. :)

a request (or suggestion) to David:

if possible, could you update the filter in such a way that it behaves consistently -i.e.independently from the image size-?

I show here the outcomes coming from applying your filter:
a) on the original image size
b) on the same image with reduced size

@dinasset : the filter behaves very locally, so it is already independent of the image size. On the contrary, it is dependent on the image resolution.
For a filter that does all its computations locally, this is natural (see e.g. all 'Smooth [...]' filters in the 'Repair/' section, they behaves the same).
Making this filter independent on the image resolution is an almost impossible task
(and even if I'd succeed, Im sure I'll get some request to make it independent on the image resolution :) ).

Sorry, David, I don't understand your answer.
The original image has been ONLY rescaled using Gimp; BOTH images (the original and the rescaled down) show -under IMAGE PROPERTIES- that they have the same resolution: 300*300.
Hence, which is the resolution you are talking about?
