I want to make a desktop background for a laptop with a 17.3 inch screen.
my question, what is the ideal size of my background image in pixels so that everything is perfectly in the 17.3 inch screen.

I myself have a desktop with a 23 "screen and 1920x1080 px is ideal, the entire screen is filled with my image, but of course that is too large for a 17.3 "screen so that part of the image is not visible.

can someone give me the best dimensions in pixels for a 17.3 "

The screen resolution will be in the computer specifications. Nothing to do with the physical size of the display.

The quick (Gimp way)
This using my 14" laptop which has a 1920 x 1080 (HD) display

Open gimp then File -> Create -> Screenshot

Image

That opens the screenshot straight into Gimp. The image size given top of the Gimp window is the size in pixels of the display for the computer.
Use that size for your new desktop image.

Image

Your other image (1920 x 1080) was too large? Most operating systems have a 'fit' option.
If it is an 'older' laptop the display might be 1366x768 - a screenshot will tell you.

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

thank you rich 2005 for the quick reply.
I sometimes make pictures for other people but they have a laptop with smaller screen sizes.
thanks again for the screen shots, so it is immediately apparent.

That was the Gimp way ;) What if the person you make the image for does not have Gimp?

It then depends on their version of Windows (assuming a Windows user) You will then have to ask them.
A right click on their desktop will always bring something up.

Windows 10 - MS always makes things more complicated than necessary

Windows 7

Even if they are still using Windows XP

Thank you very much, Rich. I Have used "trial and error" in the past which is time consuming. This makes much more sense.

Resolution should be irrelevant, only Aspect Ratio is important. If your LapTop uses a wide-screen 16x9 display, you can use 1920x1080. If your LapTop uses a 4x3 display, you can use 1920x1440.

Resolution is relevant, otherwise you can make 16x9 image. Scaling blurs things a bit, so for a perfect image using the actual screen resolution is best.

4:3 aspect ration and 17"3 size must be very, very rare.

I have to disagree. If you are down-scaling it's a moot point. As for 4:3 aspect ratio, it just hypothetical not directly related 17.3 screen. My statement stands only Aspect ratio is important. Same goes for TV as goes for PC.

For a photo yes, for graphics, no, because downscaling is going to add some fuzziness to the hard edges.
