In the southwest of England there is a town called Glastonbury and it is frequented by hippies and newagers, many who believe it is King Arthur's Avalon. There is the myth, there is the history and then there is a third way to view the town; the way recommended by Dion Fortune in her book "Glastonbury, Avalon Of The Heart" - with the eyes of the spirit. With the eyes of the spirit wide open, coming down from the north, your first view of the tor is a very mystical and enchanting experience. This fantasy view of Avalon was painted with that in mind.

Erisian - well that is really awe inspiring and certainly looks much better than what I remember of Glastonbury.

Actually Glastonbury and it's music festival happened to feature in our Aussie press this week with articles on the increasing problems of 'trench foot' for attendees, stating ... "trench foot is on the list of common ailments seen at the five-day affair which can turn into a 1000 acre mud-fest when the weather is bad" :hehe

Peace brother ... peace sister ... like the Aldermaston marches it all seems so long ago now!

Cool image.
I thought of adding a flying bird or 2 might be in order. Of course it's entirely your choice to do so or not.

Thank you everybody. :)

OMG - I never went to Glastonbury festival but I went to the last tolerated Stonehenge festival in 1984. I was 19 years old at the time and it was very hot and dry but out on Salisbury plain it was freezing cold at night. Still, I survived it! :hehe

Good idea Wallace. A little natural life will go down well in Avalon. :)

Thanks Erisian. ;)

Sometimes flying bird silhouettes can help to convey a greater sense of distance to an image. I also really like your earth, rocks and what looks like mist. :bigthup

I added some birds as Wallace suggested and more importantly, a signature. Look at the first post ( viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12733&p=172462#p172462 ) - the original is still there for comparison.

Oh I know of that legend, there was a game I played where the plot was based off of his sword and you had to find all the pieces to get to Avalon.

I like this a lot, it has a almost yearning feel. Like, you're almost there but it's still a long way.
Nice! :D

Hey Erisaian, just stumbled on this post while trying to find specs for GimpChat sig - my formative years were spent in teepees and tents, Stonehenge, Windsor Great Park, Glastonbury, Seasalter and Hebden Bridge to name a few, your artwork is awesome "man" - in Peace - RJKD

That is a beautiful piece Erisian.

Seems to me another tale was born of Glastonbury. Jesus being raised by his uncle there while he was a young boy. And Jesus showing his uncle how to mine for tin. This would also be the uncle that purchased the tomb and removed Jesus's body from the cross after asking Pilate for the remains.

I've always pictured in my mind Avalon in a distance as looking very much like your picture.

Really very nice work, Erisian. You are a gifted artist.

Wow, thank you everybody!
Rod - there is probably no end to the myths and variations surrounding Glastonbury. Read up on the Glastonbury thorn for example.
RJKD - nice to meet another hippie!
