Taking the long weekend to make a quick game... something with flying squirrels, garden gnomes, and lasers.

Title screen drawn mainly with GIMP; gnome with MyPaint + GIMP

I just shared the best part

I drew a very long forest background for practice, then realized it would make a nice scrolling background for a game. I'm actually pretty pleased with it.

I have three mobile games published, and a few Flash games, but this would be the first in which I used any digital painting. I wanted to capture a bit of the look of the Orisinal games, but do something totally ridiculous in terms of gameplay. I think laser-wielding garden gnomes fits nicely.

I want to make a game with digital painting but I haven't come up with a concept yet.

It's hard to think of something that uses just one. Something like a SCUMM-style adventure game would be an enormous undertaking... although you could make a good game with just one or two rooms if you're clever with the puzzles.

Laser Summer Day was just an excuse to add some action to a painting :P The gameplay length is of the duration of "Flappy Bird"... and as far as monetization of the app goes, I'm not expecting much retention.

I have another game under construction that's closer to Rogue/Diablo, but there's no opportunity for landscape painting because it's sprite and tile based.

I finished the game several days ago, but it always takes a while to get through the Apple review process. Here it is, though!

Ry is the mascot for my blog, who now stars in his own game!

Looks cool. I like your Flying Wiener Dog concept.

That's Neece! She belongs to my parents. She'll run to the door barking every time I knock on it, so one day I took a high speed camera and got a picture of her with all four feet off the ground. Hence, flying wiener dog!

She has the goofiest face, too.

It's on Newgrounds, too. The last time I checked, someone was closing in on my all time high score of 2,350.

I'm thinking of doing a sequel with more unique game mechanics. This came out a bit too much like Flappy Bird. I'd like to have changing colors in the forest, too--a bit more variety. The game is only 5 MB without the Retina-scaled graphics, so there's plenty of room for more artwork.

I thought about making a "challenge mode" that doubled the number of lasers.

I really need a more Disney-esque background, so that the juxtaposition of the imagery and foreground is better. Time to GIMP up some more Fordham Forest scenery!

It's not any easier with your thumb covering part of the screen :). The game is actually intended to last only a minute or so at most. I'm trying to build up a library of "minute games". The challenge is to keep app retention rate up on a game that's so short. The medal system is intended to discourage people from deleting the app off their phone--since they'd be throwing away something, even if intangible.

I love those Wiener Dog Races too. Never a dull moment when there's a Wiener Dog about.

Thanks :D So far I seem to have gotten more hits on this game than any of the others put together.

There used to be a wiener dog race in Houston. Sometimes I miss having a dog, but during the school year I don't know if I'd be home enough for it to be happy.

Well... at least you gave the dogs happiness some consideration and that's a good thing. ;)
