Reporting some success at creating a heightmap/depthmap with GIMP, using the Very Fine "bleed-into-transparent" script by RobA:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3153&start=40#p41455In this case I tried a bas-relief of a flour.
Starting with a 2D line drawing, I created 3 different bw levels of contours in different levels containing transparent areas representing individual features surrounded by black as "hints" for the script (100%, 70, and 30), and the used the script to "loft" the region by smoothing/smearing the levels.

It is crude, but it was proof-of-principle, and I think the roughness can be fixed by smudge-tooling.
The "art" is in imagining where the contours ought to be, but it's apparently pretty forgiving because even I got a recognizable result.
