Instead of using a convolution only layer, I did some contrast enhancements to the image and then used a white fill layer set to 80% opacity and merged down. Then, I downsized the result before feeding it into the 3D Elevation preset. :)

after some amendments to the filter, now it produces one of these outcomes:
1-no color restored (it's a parameter)

Looks promising Diego, but, the problem with restoring color is the color artifacts. Again, I just took the original (some contrast and smoothing stuff) then applied the solid white fill set to 80% opacity before running the flow (no convolution used). This will return the colors once the flow is complete. :)
