Does anyone have a good technique for it? I'm not entirely enthralled with the results I've been getting.

Here's what I came up with.
Using G'MIC's Lights & shadows>Relief-light, output mode>New layer(s).
Adjusted the Relief-light layer's opacity.
Masked out skin and background from Relief-light layer.
Merged visible layers.
Adjusted Hue-Saturation.
Added slight Curves adjustement.
Final adjustement was to apply, Filter>Enhance>Sharpen.

This is how I did it.

Create a new layer, and take a brush, and make marks where you want the highlights to be:

Then give it a gaussian blur of 35:

Then set that layer to overlay:

Animation showing the difference:

A blending (screen and overlay) of Garagecoder's Emboss (masked for hair). Did a few other things too, but mainly that. :)

Nice results you guys.
There's many options one can use to add highlights, as was demonstrated.

WOW, those are all great. I always found that hi-lighting hair was very difficult and I always messed them up. COOL

Try finishing up with G'MIC, Blur [depth-of-field] (in '/Degradations/')
