A little study from my Where Red Apples Lie world. The unknown girl is featured before in my gallery, including the comic snippets. This is a particular style I've used consistently with this particular character and story.

It started as a little anatomy study. :) Comments and critique are as always appreciated.

Update: After your feedback I made some changes:
- Fixed anatomically weird thumb
- Shrunk her foot/leg a bit, clarified the shape of her left breast a little
- Made the perspective of the other stool more distinct
- Some more shadows
- Experimented with more depth cues by blurrying the background and stool in the foreground
Lemme know if it's better!
.

I think it looks nice.
Is the thumb of the hand that's holding crutch in the wrong place?

That's an excellent point - the thumb is indeed in the wrong place! Thanks, I'll fix that.

OK, she has only one foot so it gets a lot of use, but didn't it grow a bit over-developed? And I can't invoke the same reason for the asymmetry of her breasts :)

Nice picture otherwise :)

Another nice piece of work Griatch. I like the way you have worked the light and shadows, especially the shadows on the ceiling. I wonder though if her left thigh should be more in shadow? Although maybe not since there seems to be another light source shining downwards onto the floor.

Keep going my friend, looking forward to more from you :).

Thanks for the comments! I went back and updated this image, while also experimenting with some other features such as more extreme depth-cues from blurrying (which also makes the rather simplistic background less prevalent). Lemme know what you think!

@Wallace
Fixed the thumb to make the hand more anatomically correct. ;)

@dinasset
Who knows what is lie or not in the red apples world...
Cool effect you added there. It looks like a church window, and I like the warm color scheme too. Good job!

@sallyanne
Thanks. :)

Good points. The foot and leg are seen pointing towards us which means they are seen in perspective but you are right that the foot still appeared too large. I shrunk it down a bit now, while further enhancing the depth cues a bit - made for an interesting experiment too.
Her breast was actually correct, but the shadow cast by her hand made the left breast less visibly pronounced. I added some more visual cues to guide the eye, hopefully better now. Thanks for the comments!

Thanks, the ceiling shadows are subtle but very intentionally placed here. One can make an argument both for and against her left leg (-stump) being lit or not since there is, indeed, another source of light there. After some deliberation I went with your suggestion though, shading the stump more helps to ground here on the stool a little better I think. Thanks for the feedback! :D

I'm surprised you didn't catch this before posting.
Nonetheless,
I've always struggled to render hands and feet in any medium.
My hats off to you Griatch

I like this moody image very much Griatch; she is a moody shadow in a shadowy world.

I can see why that may seem surprising, but it's partly an artefact of my work process. When working with an image, it's easy to go "blind" to it - one knows so well what one intends to convey, and that knowledge may occlude what is actually being conveyed. This is a very real and common problem for any painter. This is one of the reasons one "mirrors" the image repeatedly to "freshen" one's eyes. It's also the reason many artists let the image "sit" for a while before publishing - so they can come back to it with "fresh" eyes and spot errors.

Personally, I prefer not to wait - I prefer to call the image "preliminarily done" and put it online right away. I find that this speeds up the corrective process - it helps include the fresh eyes of others next to my own. Other people give different perspectives, tends to clarify what is unclear and gives feedback that often allows me to correct errors and misconceptions all in one fell swoop. Thanks for contributing to this process. :)

@oldmangrumpy
Thanks, Red Applies Lie is probably my most gloomy story/world/concept. :)

you're perfectly right, Griatch, it's more risky (prone to errors) to draw from own fantasy that from life (and even from life sometimes a painter paints what he thinks he is seeing, instead of what he really sees....)

Btw shouldn't we start a "GimpChat for a second crutch" fund raiser? Having only one crutch is likely making her life very difficult (she used to have two, but in recent drawings she's got only one left).

I'm loving the depth cues - blurring the background has really brought the focus onto her face and the red bottle and the extra shadows on her thigh work really well in my opinion. Nice work Griatch :).

@ofnuts
Hehe, that sounds like a fun fundraiser! I guess she put the other crutch down on the floor since it looked too messy to have her hold up both. ;)

(Btw, this image has another big "artistic license" that I've not seen anyone comment or reflect about yet. Due to how the flow worked out, the image is mirrored. This simply looked better, but it means that for once it's her left leg that is missing, not the right one as usual ... ;) )

@Artloader
Great, good to hear the depth cues is not messing up too badly. Felt it worth to experiment with.
