There is ... something in the old monastery. You have to come see.

Made for the Random Art Prompt An abandoned monastery. Took about an hour. Comments and feedback welcome as usual!

Update: There is a timelapse of making this here:

The overall composition, of course, resembles a skull, and the painterly aspect reminds me of Disney background work, which I always love...but the best bit is how (even though it is brightly lit), the 'thing' brought to mind the black monolith from 2001 A Space Odyssey. Excellent!

There is now a timelapse up for this, with art and music by me. :)

@steven8

Yep, the skull reference is pretty clear, still nice you caught it! I am experimenting with a more painterly/sketchy style, as well as to work faster (this took about an hour). I didn't quite think of the monolith reference before but I see what you mean when you point it out! :D Thanks for the comment!

Thanks really cool Griatch.
I'd like to create a time-lapse video, but haven't figured out how to do it just yet.

Wooo timelapse! Yayyy! :D
I like how you are able to block in stuff, I have to go line by line. Your way looks a little less frustrating. xD

@Wallace: It's not too hard, unless you have an apple computer idk anything about that. In Windows just get hyper came (free) record your screen, open file in movie maker, and make speed faster.

I have made a long tutorial on how to do a timelapse efficiently in Linux here. If you are on Windows, listen to Moko. ;)

Blocking in is only a matter of having a wide enough brush. :) Working with a lower opacity will give you more control and let you block things in without it being one solid color all over. You may notice that I also very seldomly erase/undo anything. Instead I paint over what I have, over and over. This is a much faster way of working I find, and also helps to produce more of a dynamic feel.

Very nice work Griatch, I love the painterly style and the lighting. The contrast of the cooler background works nicely with the more warmly lit central column. Thanks for sharing the timelapse as well - it's always fascinating to see someone else paint. Looking forward to more my friend :).

I'm a little late to reply, but thanks!

Hah, I wouldn't call myself a musician. I was just freehand-riffing a little to fill up the time. :) It was a light and quick piece of music to make - and one can tell in the quality ... but it was fun! Thanks for the comment, you are the only one that noticed the music. :D

Thanks, glad you like it! I bounced back and forth a bit just on how to light the central part in the best way. Timelapses are fun - also for myself to remember what the heck I was doing/thinking when making something. ;)
