I found this in the 'Render' selection. I have never heard of it or have seen anyone mention it.

Has this been a part of Gimp for a long time? or is it new?

I had fun playing with it and it works well with some of the GMIC filters, Not crazy about the colors, but they can be changed
Anyway some samples

What do you start with to run the Qbit on?

I like to make wallpapers/Destop backgrounds, so I usually go with a 1366x768

I dont think it matters, It should work on any size, I was using select alpha, on some shapes, and it worked for that

I found out that if its a circular design, you will want a square surface, mine is long and makes them an egg shape

Its really a fun render tool, to warp or recolor. Theirs all kinds of stuff

My favorite is the tie die looking one I distorted it a little and brightened it with curves, I really like it

You can find a lot of Qbist settings on Deviantart.

As Norseman said it is fun. It has been a part of gimp for awhile. Maybe it doesn't get mentioned much because not many people know what to use it for?
I have played with it. Made a pattern once but don't use it much.

I'm not sure if I "get" how to do it. Filled the background with a pattern, selected all, went to qbist and I don't think qbist used my background. Anyway, took it to G'MIC and used the Hope Poster filter on it.

I don't think it does use your existing pattern. It generates it's own.

@Oregonian
If you make your own pattern, then add another layer, run Qbist on it then overlay it you will keep your original pattern with a couple of differences from the overlay.

Use the saturation tool after to make the magenta lighter or darker.
Could even try the contrast tool there. also as I said to Odin you can overlay one on another. You may need to flatten it first though.
Here is an original and one I played with. I'm sure you could do one better.

Odin do you know, where it says 'open' in the filter, can you open another picture in it?

As far as I know it's only for importing saved Qbist textures.
BTW, I desaturated the desktop one. I normally desaturate all my Qbist textures and then use something like Colorize, modes with them. They're a good start for creating unique backgrounds. The hard part is finding a decent source texture. Qbist retains the last one you used until you close Gimp, so it's available to save.

Thanks for clearing that up. I tried to open a picture - for the colours and gimp crashed on me - now I know why.
I thought your pic was desaturated :)
