Dalia Thank you! :) I did the one in post 169 and there I applied "GMIC - Frame - Cube" but I repeated the same image reducing the colours to 10 and applied wood textures like usual in this thread, but when I applied the GMIC Effect, removed upper and bottom from the result filling it with more wood. Simple but effective. ;)

Wow, I do a hut and Issabella and Dinasset come back with whole villages like true artists :clap

So here is my homage to these wood artists -

Image

I tried a wood version of the glass/wood image in another thread then tried it out (on Issabella's recommendation :) ) with the GMIC Frame Cube filter -

today something new (this post of mine is not correctly placed, as you will understand soon....)
instead of filling the quantized areas with wood, I used gradients (Mandelbulb), many and with many different shape...

that's really heretical !

OK, fan-girls (and thanks a lot for your kind expressions).

My std flow is this:

1-open a suitable RGB photo
("suitable" can't be defined: try and see whether the result is good)
2-duplicate the layer and smooth it (I use G'MIC anisotropic)
3-convert image to indexed, choosing a number of colours 8 to 24
(it depends on your ..."patience" level...
for this last one I chose 24, due to the many details)
4-convert back to RGB
5-for each colour-area:
5a-fill it with a wood pattern
5b-apply script-fu-chisel
(for big areas I use these values:
- filter mode = chisel
- azimuth = 135
- elevation and depth both at 15
for small areas I use these values:
- filter mode = carve
- azimuth = 315
- elevation and depth both at 5
6-set the resulting wood layer to GRAIN-MERGE
(over the smoothed layer)
7-new layer from vibible, SOFTLIGHT, opacity 45%
This is the base outcome, but normally I take the BG
and raise it on top, then set it to HARDLIGHT at 75%
That's it.
Try, but start with 8-10 colours....it's easier
(obviously it depends from the source photo, in this case I couldn't stay on my std 9 colours)

addtl info to complete the "chisel" parameters:
- width = 10
- softness = 5
- roundness = 1
- bevel power = 2

dinasset, that is absolutely beautiful and definitely if you hadn't written a tutorial, you would have had a whole group of your followers pleading for one. Thank you!

Between you and oldmangrumpy, my mind is in overdrive. :clap

I think I'm already there - my mind is a jumble of glass, wood and, and...? See what I mean. Will have to take a break for a few hours and settle my feathers before I attempt anything. :wh

No where near the detail or patterns I would have liked but I tried. Results are of dinasset's tutorial (did not do the chisel part  ) and Issabella's use of G'mic > frame > cube.

Probably can't tell - it is the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan.

Hi Dalia,
as first attempt it looks nice.
About "chisel": did you notice that I used an .scm filter instead of an .exe? By this way it can be applied also in a Mac environment.
About the G'mic frame(cube): did you try it with smaller values (smaller than 3.0, I say)?
Don't rely on what you see on the filter preview, the actual result is different.

Dalia, I find your result to be brilliant. I like it. :yes
I'll try it with Dinasset's tutorial at weekend. What I don't understand is .exe or .scm, I don't know what I have to apply. :(

Issabella, I was simply saying that for the bevel effect I used an .scm filter (chisel.scm) instead of an .exe filter (like Beautify), so that also Mac users can apply it.
You may choose either one: the Beautify suggested in this original tut (Norseman said: I have found that the beautify plug in works best because, it keeps a lot of the wood detail.) or the Chisel suggested in my short tut.

Only 6 colours
Experimented also a sepia layer (obtained thru [G'MIC] Sepia: -gimp_sepia 0,1,0,0 ) (mode=HardLight) between the basic outcome and the BG raised to top
Here the outcome:
