Pat625 - thank you for your comments but so much for me saying I was using chisel/carve exclusivrely in this thread. You know that I like to 'explore' GIMP just to see what turns out. :)

For the image above I actually took a photo and desaturated it. Then I used that desaturated layer to bump map a layer filled with a wooden pattern. Then I repeated that action against a second layer with a different colour wooden patter. Finally juist did some blending to get the final result.

Also tried the lighting effects filter in a similar way but need to refine that approach yet.

Very nice, OMG. Being with small children constantly does have its effects. Besides being exhausted, you keep hearing their songs that were repitiously sung or played all day!
