I hope you'll become at the end a fan of this new technique.
BTW I didn't change anything in the process, except using 16 colour areas.
The user has to evaluate the result with different number of colours.
In this case I saw 16 was good.

I have a better feeling with the new settings (color/luma). I would like to suggest to replace blank by another color. When blank takes a large zone you've got a maximum contrast with that technic. A good way to avoid this is to replace pure blank by grey as in the printing industry.
In the test with the number of patches, I can see that light areas are too strong. May be some preparation would adjusts lights to avoid burned zones ? I feel this technic needs smooth changes in the image. Hope it will help.

Thanks Francis for your suggestion.
I applied a preprocessing step to reduce whites to gray.
Repeated the test (only for the 3 sizes: 4,8,16)
