I really like it. Well done. Care to share your steps?

Transparent to White gradient map on duplicate layer (need to have alpha channel on that layer). Supplicated til happy. Then original on top and dup that. Set very top layer to screen (mainly to keep the background less noisy when you create the convolution layer with this result). I then merged down and dupped and ran wavelet denoise on top layer (1000/0.90 for the settings) and set this layer to Grain Extract and merge down. This is your convolution layer. Set this layer to grain merge then duplicate til happy. Now merge visible. Dup then auto-equalize the base layer and then use your erasure tool on top layer around the hair. Merge then dup and do some anisotrophic smoothing (G'MIC) on top layer and blend top with base til happy. Way too tired and lazy to do a step by step. My bet is this can be completely automated and all in G'MIC. Still, wavelet denoise plugin is cool and glad I have this filter. :)

edit:

Oh yeah; copied the original on top set to color and adjusted opacity to taste and flattened then saved. :)

Thanks again for the words. For a variant, took my result, ran it through Segmentation (G'MIC) and blended with original then ran anti-alias custom preset (G'MIC) and blended that to taste. Added crinkled paper texture at the end. Now back to the sack; got less than 2 hours then back to work. lol

:)

Very nice result Lyle :). I like the way most of the image has gotten brighter but there are still a few dark bits.

Thanks for sharing your steps. I guess I really need to learn how to use G'MIC.

Try this way:

Open the image
Duplicate it and name it as top colour mode
Apply G'mic Freaky B&W as New layer(s) in output mode; use default values
Duplicate this G'mic output layer and apply Invert (Colour) and Erode (Generic), then set this layer in dodge blend mode.
Now, create New from visible layer, set it in Multiply mode and apply Levels (slice to right). You must get a sketch lines layer.

Placed the named top colour mode layer on the top of the layers slack and set it in overlay blend mode and opacity around 68%

Can try with other blend modes as screen, dodge, soft light, hard light, grain merge and colour, and play with the opacity.

Love the high key look, but both tutorials look hard to do.

Thanks Jamack.
Following your steps and applying 3 different Modes on top: very nice outcomes.

2-ton, it seems to me a bit easier to follow, probably because of the example xcf
maybe Lyle (who opened this kind of very interesting outcomes) will do the same, when he will have time not during his night...thanks
