Open the image in its own tab in your browser (or any image viewer/editor), scale it/zoom it so that the centers of the circles are physically about 60mm (2.5") apart (on regular screens (~100DPI) you can just zoom out to 66%). Then get close until you see a third object in the middle of each pair. The top one is a pit, the bottom one a pyramid.

Of you do this properly you don't need to squint. On the contrary, keep your eyes parallel. The hard part is doing this while focusing on something close, far-sighted people with glasses have an advantage.

Over on gimp-forum.net there is a "pattern" version which may be easier for some.
