Used G'MIC's Contour>Gradient RGB to create a mask and used G'MIC's B/W>Engrave only on the dark areas and applied to the line result (on white background of course) for this illustration. Lots of nuance stuff too, but the majority of the effect was the line/engrave blend.

Sorry for the belated reply, Pat (just got back from work; had to do 14 hours today (4 hours overtime which I don't mind since it's 1.5 times pay). Definitely glad you liked the result.
