Haven't done one of these in a while. Biggest problem I had in the past were edge aberration artifacts. I believe I found a way to address that. Of course, the original image had chromic aberrations from the get go and I did not address that issue. And then there were the cleaning steps. lol

:)

Thanks, Warrior. My only pet peeve is that there's no work-a-round for the cleanup step (and a lot of selective other things). Hate noise. lol

I had forgotten I sort of made a tutorial doing these a few years back. Pretty much the same steps. :)

I wanted to take a crack at the bear. Created using a Laplacian Pyramid Filter.

Perhaps someone may want to write a gimp plugin utilizing Laplacian Pyramid Filter. Here are the white papers: http://people.csail.mit.edu/sparis/publi/2011/siggraph/

The Laplacian Pyramid Filter I used was a plugin for Paint.NET. Here is the interface:

Yes a Gimp plugin for this filter would be great. I use it regularly to retrieve details in shadows. It's one of the reasons I still use Paint.NET. I have to use an older version (v3.5.11) because I'm running it in Linux under wine and Paint.NET is Windows only.

For anyone interested in trying out this filter in Paint.NET, here is a link to the plugin thread:
https://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/ ... ct-plugin/

The author is Michael Vinther. AFAIK he never posted the source, only the compiled dll.

Gmic 2.0.2 (pre-release) has a decent tonemap filter. Here's a before/after example:

In head to head comparison, Laplacian Pyramid filter blows it away however....
