I do not have a tut for the lightning,I like to make animations With moving images So I gained a lot of experience.
I made this animation from my own idea.

I wouldn't like to be in that plane gimper ;) Great job on the lightning :)

There are two places in gimp / G'mic where you can get lightning effects.
Under fractals in 'gimp > render >fractal explorer'
and
David has 2 on in G'mic under Rendering > lightning and rendering neon lightning
