Don't spend a lot of time with bump mapping but did this recently
Using Graechan's Path Shape creator, mh3Dbevel, a gradient, light and shadow - lighting effects bump map (not necessarily in that order) I got this

:clap Sallyanne, your two last outcomes are really good. I love the spiral metallic one.

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

Thank you Pat, dinasset and Issabella. I was quite pleased with the spring too.
Flowers are a work in progress though. I was quite surprised how the leaf layer turned out. I just used a leaf brush and some of them were less opaque than the others and you can still see them.

Still very much behind many people and probably always will be.

Had a couple of days of the internet (forced) and still could not think of much to do. So I messed around with a "Drop" from 'path shape creator' and came up with these

That's the beauty of Gimp. With so many options you are ahead of some people and behind others in different areas. I know I'm behind in many areas because I'm learning new things every day. You've taught me a few things too! Your work is amazing!

I too am well behind most people using Gimp. I've only started using it recently, but I've been editing photos and video for years. I'm quickly learning how to use Gimp to get the results I want.

I just now figured out a way to make decent engraving-carving effect...

Hi racer-x,
I watched this vid:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1K3L7RdbKw
I found that select > invert and then drop shadow works because it's shading the inside rather than the outside of the engraved object. I think 'engraved' is below the surface and 'embossed' is above the surface.
