I'm concentrating on face painting, here are my first couple of attempts, I'm now focusing on hair and getting that somewhat ok.

...go on ! It seems you found a good technique.
My suggestion: now improve the hair aspect, it has a lot of relevance on "framing" the face.

Thankyou dinasset, Erisian made a great tutorial. I've found a really good photoshop tutorial for hair and I'm attempting to create the same effect with Gimp. Getting the exact correct brush for the path strokes is the key I think.

I don't know whether you like to use only the painting technique or accept to use other Gimp capabilities.
In the latter, just applying more contrast on the head could improve the result a step further.
Example:

You're on the right track.

Here I applied brightness/contrast on the whole image (simpler..., a bit different result)

Thankyou PhotoMaster, Issabella and dinasset, your encouragement motivates me.
I hadn't given any thought to overall tweaking of the image dinasset, I really like the outcome of "plus contrast", something to consider, thankyou.

I really like the way you shaded and accented his hair and beard!

You are doing some amazing work here RJKD. The lips on the last one are really realistic - any tips for me? I really hope you do more of these faces as you are improving rapidly. :bigthup :coolthup

High praise coming from you Erisian, thank you for your encouragement. I use a lot of Gaussian blur. One aspect I'm struggling to nail is getting a blend from the lips to the skin, for me they still look 'stuck on'. My go to reference is your excellent tutorials... :tyspin

You are doing a wonderful job, RJKD. Keep on! OH, Yes, Erisian is a good teacher. I always enjoy his creations and wish he could participate more. But then, I know myself that life often gets in the way.

The wide shadow under the lips goes too far around. If you try keeping it to the middle you may find your lips look more a part of the face.

RJKD, While looking at your painting, I noticed that her Rt. Eyelashes are much shorter than the Lt ! She is a beauty anyway!
