No didn't use layer masks, I just selected each gravel/pebble, then to path and cut away until whole image is done then go back and used paths to cut out random images.

trandoductin: oooooh i like that! :jumpclap but good heavens, all that cutting must have taken ages! i have to admit when i saw it i thought it was done by some script or other. i like the original photo too, it's simple and decorative.
