I'm currently game-mastering a fantasy RPG for some friends (we play online). It's a classic dungeon crawl but we play with a lot of role playing and 'theater of the mind' combat (so no grids or miniatures). I took to making a few bits of artwork to help guide their imagination. Nothing fancy, just quick sketchy images to relay the feel and creepiness of the setting.
The entrance to the tomb. I use FoundryVTT, which means that I can adjust the light, add light sources and make it rain etc.
The oppressive inside of the tomb. Again, in Foundry, I can add flickering light sources to make this animate and 'pop' a little more.
Rather than go with bog-standard skeletons, they encountered this ... thing on the left there. Which was a lot more unnerving for the players than a simple walking skeleton! The right one is the upgraded version coming up on a later level ...
This little fellow was surprisingly friendly, and kindly offered to eat the character's feet or hands whenever they wanted to - he'd be honored to. Clearly an offer of friendship if I ever saw one.
Waterlogged and dry versions of the second level, which they find through a hole under a hulking statue.
... Surely that's just a statue, right?
Scenes from the third and final level of the tomb. We'll see if I make more images for that when they get there!
Update: Posted some more images here:
