I also made this one into a gif but got a lot of distortion. Does this have to do with the 256 color limit?

you could try saving as apng and the distortion will not be there.

Graechan - I looked up the apng thingy, plug-in or whatever but from the threads I gather that it does not work well with XP and 2.6.11.

Drac, before you save the gif file, click Image > Mode > Indexed. Then down at the bottom of that dialog under Dithering, click the color dithering dropdown and choose Floyd-Steinberg (normal). It really helps a gif file look a little better. You are never going to get high quality gif files but that is a bit of help for it.
