Tutorial is here - http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/create-text-portrait

Image

This one i went a bit of a different route and added a bg text layer.I also added a shadow blurred behind the rendered image to give it a pop out effect.

Yet another with the layer modes changed a bit to reveal less of the actual image.

I have to admit i like #3 the best (bottom one)

Fun tutorial though especially when you start playing around with the layer modes and adding
your own special touch. :)

I do believe i have figured out how to make a character pop out from the text - more tests to follow.
In this one i selected the text layer - alpha to select all the text - Edit/Clear - copy the image layer - select the text layer - paste into.
This pastes the color of the image into the cleared text.
Now just select the image layer - duplicate it - alpha to select it - fill with black
Filters/blur/Gausian blur at 16 - set opacity at 100%
Place the black layer behind the image layer - select the image layer again - alpha to select - select the layer you just filled with black and blurred - select/shrink by 3 pixels - select/invert/edit/clear - or delete both work.
Now you have a shadow edge around your image - set the opacity on the image real low just so you still see a small bit of detail. You want most of the detail to be in your text colors, and the shadowed edge.
Now set the shadowed edge layer to an opacity you like.
Results -

Very cool Rod, thanks for the info about spoilers.
I forgot what the name for that Text like that was, but something I would like to look into.

More experience is needed. I spent the most time getting my text setup than anything else. I think that is the key. I used the authors font size of 16px. In my example I learned that a smaller text size to image size, all lowercase and more random distribution of the text would have been better. First I will try to make a formula to calculate the best font size to image size ratios for text art.
