Rod-

I was inspired by your sig to do this:

I did it fully manually... what a lot of work! Did you do your sig manually, or was there a script that made your flipping letters?

That's a cool effect.

I used to have an old mechanical clock that worked like that. It was a neat design but it finally just wore out.

Very cool RobA, I had one like that too. The numbers seemed to drop

Really cool Rob; if you can do 0, 3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9, then you could actually make a clock. ;)

:)

That is cool but you are asking the wrong person. lol

You could slow the first digit to count from 0 to 5 and slow it 10 times slower the last and that would give you 0 to 60 seconds and so forth to get your a 24 hour clock. Don't think it would take any special programming either since it can be set as sets of gifs side by side. A gif clock if you will. But still would require work. I wouldn't try to make it a single gif since it would require an extravagent number of layer cells making for a huge file size (not to mention a huge amount of work). :)

I think it would need some programming so that you can "set the time" and such. Inkscape had a tut for making 3d clock text that changed with the time, so I guess you could set it up that way???

Nicely done Rob, and no i did not use any scripts.
It is a lot of work. :)
I actually created mine in Flash and converted that to GIF.

Since you are in flash you could easily make a clock using that.

Yes that is true.Clocks in Flash are very easy to implement. To make a clock out of an GIF file is not very plausible. Not only would it be a very huge file, but think what you would have to go through to change your clock. :lol :)

Again, it could be done with simple gifs and some html or BB code to place the digits side by side. Each gif wouldn't take that much memory. Now if you required a single gif, then the file size would be astronomical. :)

Below's a lazy try using Rob's animation and a modified version of it. Of course it's all wrong; need to tweek the time and shift a few digits, but, I do believe it's possible (if you aren't as lazy as I am {I'm a filter guy}; lol). :)

No real tut necessary Molly; you can place images side by side per the following:

[img]http://www.gimpchat.com/download/file.php?id=4808[/img][img]http://www.gimpchat.com/download/file.php?id=4797[/img]

Note; no space between the concatenated image BBCs. :)

lyle when you call images though they would most likely appear at different times to each person causing a skewed time.

Don't believe that's the case Zward since the graphics will show up exactly the same time (within milliseconds anyway) so it will always initiate at the same time. If you get the initial timing right from the get go w.r.t. the gifs of course, it would give you a working clock using simple BBC (or HTML) code like I mentioned. I, of course, did not get the timing right (multiplied by 10 and add a second; should have added 2 seconds apparently and also should have shifted the left hand animation by 1 set). :)

Alright say everything loads up in the right timing, nice miracle for it to work on all browsers and to appear at the same time, but how would you set the time? From what I understand of the web, part time job as web site designer, the easiest way to do this is to set it up either in flash, or using a mix of javascript, gifs, and css. For the gifs though you would have to create each letter with the flip animation partially started on the next number. I would love to see either of these implemented. Let me know how this turns out.

You don't Zward; there you got me. lol

It will always start with the initial time set. Not a useful clock of course; just a proof of concept for a programless clock. Better to just make an up (or down) timer out of it for effect. ;)

As for me to do this; forget about it. Way too lazy I'm am. :)

Same here, and you were right, great proof of concept, and nice timing on the flips btw that didn't get posted accidentally shut off computer for updates, and I still think that it is possible using a variant of these flips.
Have each one show the bottom half of the number before it, than finish the flip, I don't really know how to implement this but I will try and find a way....
