Windows guy I am, but, GIMP is beyond just a Windows program so don't thing that should be a part of the splash PC, so I voted 2. Graphically, these are pretty cool. :)

Yes Lyle, I noticed that too. it should have Mac, Linux and window friendly in some form, or even user friendly.

She should be a Niece, to be gender correct. I like the overall theme of the Splashes so I picked both.

Nice work Photocomix.

That would be the splash for a specific Windows version
And "friendly" means that just as example, support for python script would work out of the box , as the Help (and the help browser),and support for PDF and to export animation in flash
All should be already included but is not because the developers need to maintain the code the most simple and compact possible

A excellent reason but at packaging time what left out to maintain the code compact could be well reintegrated at binary level (and so without modifying the source code )..and that is what i did

so you will find also Liquid Rescale, Resyntesizer, the Layer FX script, (to summarize)

Linux version is already "Linux friendly" :
in most of the distro you may already install Gimp, the gimp help, and the most needed plugin with 1 single operation and python and pdf support works already out of the box

Exactly what i want offer to Windows user (not a wishful thinking, i am still checking last details but seems everything ready ..well ready for testing

About Mac no idea i don't use Mac so i can't give a opinion

Anyway if you like the idea but less the text here in the zip the XCF
http://sta.sh/0vrfdw4gagg
I also included 2 more different BG (big to allow to crop a detail, hi res to allow scale down )

this was another splash, ( alas i lose the xcf of this..but still may be easily edited)

Image

In the last is another parent of Wilber, the more aged and less friendly Marquise Wilbrowich Von Darken, here in a rare moment of relax
(you must see her when become nervous...)

Nice work Photocomix.

I voted for the first because the placements of text at the bottom interferes with the messages that Gimp posts. The bottom of a splash screen is where Gimp sends all the "plugins loading" information.

I like the third one, the one that you lost the sxcf.

i believe i left sufficient space..if not i may correct easily

Anyway i too prefer the first, i believe most chose the second because as image looks more balanced but as splash may look better because the marching fonts and the progress bar should be better balanced by script close to the top

When you are reading the posts look in the bottom right hand corner of each post, should see a button stating quote. Click that. After entering the editor, dont delete anything above "[/quote]" minus the quotation marks.

I didn't delete anything that time and it still came out wrong! I think I'm jinxed.

Those are nice PC.The Windows friendly fits in my opinion as Gimp was originally NOT designed for it's platform.
I voted for #2 myself as i like smaller font on images if possible.
I am still using my brewhah splash until i think of something better. :)

gimp is designed to be multi-platform , and may work well in any OS ..BUT its developers are all linux users many even really hate Windows so basically on linux everything works as a charm on Windows everything COULD work as a charm...BUT::

.. there is the potential but is not expressed :

1)you install gimp

2)then you discover that the help is missed, and require a separate download (and to use the help at best is also needed to find a plugin )

3) next you try to open a commune file as a pdf and you discover that you have not only to install another program (ghostscript) but to even to modify something in the Windows innards to make it working

4) do you want something as PS layer effect?
possible just require a separate download

5) There is something in gimp equivalent to PS liquid rescale ?
Sure it works even better...but again require a search and aseparate DL

6) you want use a python script ?
no problem you just need to find a good tutorial for the how to, trace and install 4 library,
and of course unistall and reinstall gimp

7) gimp has something for"content aware filling " ?
sure and of course is not installed

8) Gimp may offer some basic CMYK support for a good print ?
sure that is possible with the separate+ plugin that obviously is not pre-installed

well list will continue but i prefer stop here
that are the basic reasons to create a "Windows Friendly" version

partha especially with the portable build made already a gigantic step in that direction
on that base i tried to go even further

PS
a 32bit version is already available , i am waiting the feedback of some beta testers to publicize but is already on my sourceforge page and soon will be also in the partha site

and the 64 bit version is basically ready (for tonight or in the worse case tomorrow )

PS i may hear the question coming
i respect much the need of the developer to maintain the code simple and compact so i carefully avoided to modify the source code (except for a few minor details as the gimprc file that control part of the the preferences ) so i did all the changes at binary level at packaging time...and i kept well separated the gimp core from any add on
