Did you use a large render? Try and use the lasso tool to get the selection in closer.

I don't ever use Renders anymore, I use Stocks now, and they were small. Lasso tool?

Use larger stocks then? Same effect different word. Gives better ending quality

I don't usually do text so I don't know if this is useful, but usually when I use the lasso tool, I feather the selection to about 2 - 3 pixels to antialias.

to improve i'd begin with the stock which seems poor quality. did you scale up? are you sure it isn't the thumbnail?

As i stated before even veteran sig creators do not use text very often.Even they have a problem getting it correct.
I wouldn't use text at all in one.
Get a nice render (very big and scale it down)
Set 1 focal point. :)
Do not use borders. Do not use text.
Abstract bg (brushes, and gradients), or use an image bg (no solid colors)

Just a few basic rules.
