Since my metallic knob tut got such a positive response, I had to play around with it a bit more. Although the highlights and gradients are not really correct for the animation, I still thought it would make a decent looking good splash for the new version.

That's pretty good. Will Gimp load a gif as splash?

Sure thing. At least it does for 2.6.11. I actually have not loaded 2.8 yet.

Yes you just have to create a folder named "splashes" in the UserFolder\.gimp-2.8 folder and place the GIF there. The name doesn't matter. On load Gimp-2.8 will play one of the splash images in that directory.
GIF
PNG
JPEG
JPG
TIFF

Work as far as i know.
I tried SVG (no go), i also tried transparent bg's.. (no go either).
I did not try animated PNG files. :)

At one time last year i had 101 images in my splashes folder.

I had a splashes folder but I always used JPG and I believe BMP. I just didn't realize you could use animated GIFs.
