Here is the finished script

To use in 2.8 you will need to install the light to Height 32bit plugin from here

To use in 2.6 you will also need the rain pattern from 2.8 that I will also post in the zip folder with script

I think you did not compile the plugin "plug_in_light_to_height"

The sources are in the archives :
http://www.aljacom.com/~gimp/l2height-0.7-64bits.zip (You can unzip : l2height-0.7.c.gz )
http://www.aljacom.com/~gimp/l2height-0.7-i686.zip

and compile l2height-0.7.c

Compiling a plugin in C is done with gimptool (available in the package "gimp-dev").

gimptool-2.0 --install /home/xxx/myplugin.c
gimptool --install /home/xxx/myplugin.c

help
gimptool-2.0 --help
gimptool --help

Unfortunately, on my Fedora 64 virtualized, there are problems :(
I will try on another Linux 64-bit in the coming days.

Ok, thanks samj. I will wait. I don't understand any of that. Anyway, I know I would mess up.

plug_in_light_to_height : Compiled for Linux 64-bit (tested Ubuntu/Fedora)

Unzip and place l2height-0.7 in the plug-ins directory (l2height-0.7.c is the source file).

Filters > Map > Light to Height...

I wish there was a way to keep the holes in the letters transparent. Notice how the B is filled in.

The easy way is to lower the 3D value and your choice of font.

Once you play around with the settings, you can gain some control over that. I guess you insert image, now I know.
