In the beginning was just rust ... just a shot of rust , not even sure if was one of my photo or from some other source (in both cases i believe the real copyright should belong to the Nature

)
If you are impatient scroll to the button to see the final result. !
But real natural rust in a photo seldom look sufficiently realistic,is no as the rust that attract more our unconscious attention, not as that in scenery of horror or steampunk movie ...instead i wanted iper-realistic rust
So first i make it seamless, so i used my graphic boost gmic filter to boost luminance and chromatic contrast and to make the detail more popping out
and i consider this the real start , here i post everything very scaled down ,but consider that at 100% zoom the detail look very different from what could be expected
the last 2 are identical except that the last was horizontally stretched to be 4.3
i already show this used as texture (
http://photocomix2.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d58lddb ,
http://photocomix2.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d58ld3s ) as planned
but i used also to create something else ... let it start with a filter , i had the image open in xnview so i used Fractalius , but if i had opened in gimp i would have used gmic Rodilius with quite similar results
from this i may get how variants i wish using Level...as i said i was on Xnview so i used "automatic level" gimp would habve offered much more options
and the nice thing is that any of those variation remain perfectly seamless as the original
Or i may populate the pattern with weird totemic beings by using mirrors... mirrors are so simple but so magic
and this that i am going to use for the final example
because all this may have a use :
as example i may open the last pattern , that just above in gimp, open mathmap , chose a distort or map filter and
and this last explain very well why i like have very huge pattern (original are about 6x bigger )
and of course same will work for globes, cubes, ellipsoids ...
